Similar to the pH measurement that quantifies how acidic or alkaline solutions are, ORP (oxidation reduction potential) measurements quantify the overall state of a solution as its ability to oxidize or reduce a chemical species. Oxidizing and reducing agents are used to participate in chemical reactions known as redox reactions. An important part of an ORP sensor is to have a sensor that is chemically inert. meaning that it cannot be oxidized or reduced. It must also have the appropriate surface characteristics to promote rapid electron exchange, a property known as high exchange current density. Two noble metals have been shown to work well for this purpose: pure platinum and pure gold. Both are commonly used in the construction of ORP detectors. The platinum sensor is often preferred because it is mechanically simpler to manufacture. Platinum can be welded to glass and also has a similar coefficient of thermal expansion. Gold sensors cannot be welded to glass and are often mounted on plastic supports that are applied to the glass or plastic pipe via tiny elastomeric fins. Many industries rely on ORP measurements such as swimming pools, food processing, boiler & cooling towers, and metal plating. ORP measurement helps the user monitor the effectiveness of disinfectant compounds, including chlorine and ozone. ORP is also used to monitor redox reactions, including the use of sulfite in the reduction of hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium in wastewater treatment.
